Window Air Conditioners

When I was younger, I remember my mom had an air conditioner in her bedroom, but hers was the only room that got any benefit from it. Later on, my parents got one of these window air conditioners to keep in the living room, but it made life on the porch unbearable. That was over 20 years ago, however, and the ones you can get today work much better. If you don’t have central air, or don’t think you can afford to have it installed, you can get air conditioners that go into the windows of your home.

With the window air conditioners I have had in the past, you could only have them in one room for them to work in the right way. That meant having the door closed at all times whether you were in the room or not. That was far from practical, but it was all that they would do. I have a newer model today, and you don’t have to do that with them. Though these window air conditioners don’t seem to cool much more than one room, they work well for that room even if you don’t have the doorway closed off.

These newer window air conditioners are also more efficient than they were in the past. That means they use much less energy but they tend to work better. They require less maintenance, but you do have to keep an eye on the air filters. They take dirt and hair out of the air (very nice if you have pets) and then give you cleaner air as it comes out. They work in the same basic way, but newer technology allows them to be more cost effective. They keep on improving with each passing year.

What you want to do with your window air conditioners when cooler weather comes is up to you. Some people leave them in the windows all year around, but that is not always the best idea. If you do this, you must have a cover to protect the outside of the window air conditioners from the freezing moisture of winter. You are far better off taking them out of the window, however, as they can cause an air leak that makes heating your home more expensive. It take a little work, but taking them out and putting them in the garage or attic can save money.

If you buy your window air conditioners today, you can save money and energy costs if you get the ones that come with the EnergyStar endorsement. These work the best and save the most in energy use. You should remember that though central air is ideal for most people, you may not need to have it. Those that live in apartments and other rentals may not have a choice. Don’t worry too much, however, as window air conditioners are very good at what they do. You may be surprised to find out how well they work today.
